Renowned for its quaint French stone villages, myriad vineyards and historical towns, such as Cèze and Aix en Provence, the breathtaking region of Provence is perfect for picturesque walks and discovering local delicacies. Sample the traditional Provençal ‘bourride’ fish stew, taste the infamous local wines, wander round the boutique shops and discover the ancient chateaux dotted around the region, such as Citadelle de Sisteron and Queyras.
When to go to South of France
This region boasts beautiful weather throughout the summer, making it the perfect season to rent a villa. It’s warmest from June through to September, with temperatures reaching the high 20s to low 30s. It’s still warm in April, May and October with temperatures often reaching low 20s.
Cultural Highlights
South of France has plenty of cultural and historical sites to explore whilst on your James Villa holiday. There are a variety of castles to visit, such as The Castle of Ponteves and The Castle of Entrecasteaux, and plenty of ancient towns and culturally fascinating villages; Montpellier has many historic sites to see including Montpellier Cathedral.
The historic city of Avignon is definitely worth a visit. Discover the medieval fortress and imposing Gothic architecture of the Palais des Papes. Or stroll along ancient cobbled streets and relax in one of the leafy squares with a good book and a coffee.
If it’s historic buildings and Roman ruins you enjoy then head to Nimes where you will find The Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

- Plan a trip to Isle sur la Sorgue, the antiques capital of France, which is famous for its variety of antique shops and hosts antique markets most Sundays. The small town has several canals running through its centre and charms visitors with plenty of cafés and restaurants along the water, all within walking distance of each other.
- Visit Musée Fabre in Montpellier, a fantastic art museum in the city centre with an amazing selection of sculptures and paintings.
- Spend an afternoon at the vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape where you can try the world-famous wine and spend some time in the pretty medieval village.
- See the Abbaye de Senanque and admire the scenery that represents the Provence region. Admire the Roman architecture and wander through the lavender fields.
- 5. Discover the Gorge du Verdon, France’s version of the Grand Canyon. It’s a river canyon set in picturesque countryside that’s 25 kilometres long and 700 metres deep.
